Trial Membership:
The first month is free for anyone to try speedskating.  We have dozens of club skates to fit you.  Our beginning and advanced level coaches are world class. After your trial period you can elect to join Virginia Speedskating via one of two options.

Full Membership:
Track 1:
When using this option you are responsible for purchasing “passes” to participate in practice sessions.  Each practice session is $10.  Your practice session may include dryland training, ice training, associated coaching, and use of club skates.
If you wish to participate in competitions there is generally a small entry fee – usually on the order of $30 per skater.  Travel costs and entry fees are the responsibility of the member.

Track 2:
When using this option you are responsible for volunteering at Virginia Speedskating bingo sessions. Your skating level will determine the number of sessions VA Speed would like for you to volunteer at each month. A high performance athlete is encouraged to volunteer at two sessions per month. Beginner skaters and non-skating members are encouraged to volunteer at one session per month.
When using this option, all practice and coaching fees are waived.
If you wish to participate in competitions, Virginia Speedskating, budget allowing, will financially assist you the best we can.

There is no limit or minimum number of sessions that you must skate. Most skaters participate in 2-3 practice sessions per week, but this is the choice of each member.

We have a wide range of sizes and quality of club skates available for our members to use. Generally, skaters eventually seek to upgrade their equipment as their skill levels improve. However, you are welcome to use our club equipment for as long as you are a member in good standing. We will assist you in the selection of upgraded equipment if you wish.

Those individuals in Track 1 will be required to pay the US Speedskating membership out-of-pocket. Those in Track 2 may have their membership covered by Virginia Speedskating. By being a member, Virginia Speedskating receives regional and national support, benefits and opportunities.

US Speedskating Association is the national governing organization of amateur and elite speedskating.  Membership fee for each competitive skater is $30 first year/ $75 competing athlete. www.usspeedskating.org

What equipment do I need?

All you need are skates, a helmet, long sleeves and pants, and gloves. A bike helmet is fine. Any kind of gloves are fine. Some people like to wear kneepads, elbow pads and shin guards. Neck guards are required for competition and recommended for practice.

You can start learning on any skates, but speedskating is best on speedskates. The Club has some entry-level skates available free of charge on a first come, first served basis. There are a number of speedskate retailers on the Web.

Most skaters who compete wear skinsuits. The Club uses a suit designed by Steve Burton (see photo at right). In addition to helmets, competitors must also wear a neck protector, shin guards and gloves.
